Russia has to play role in political solution in Syria – Theresa May
Russia has to play its role in political solution of the Syrian conflict and should allow humanitarian aid to get through in Aleppo, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday, Sputnik reported.
"But Russia has to play its part in that. Russia has to accept that we need that humanitarian aid to get through into Aleppo," May told ITV News in an interview.
She noted that the international community should put more pressure on Russia over its position in the Syrian conflict.
"It is for the international community to continue to put more pressure on Russia," May said.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups. The United States and its allies have been supporting the so-called moderate opposition forces in Syria, while Russia has been supporting Syria's legitimate authorities.
