(Itar-Tass) -- The Russia-NATO partnership continues to be a strategic element of the consolidation of security in the Euroatlantic region, says a final declaration of the NATO summit in Riga, reports Trend.

The document welcomed the progress, achieved in the boosting of a political dialogue and practical cooperation between NATO and Russia. NATO believes their cooperation still does not measure up to its potential.

The declaration stressed that NATO urged Russia to enhance their cooperation on the key aspects of security, including the war on terrorism.

The leaders of the NATO countries praised Russia's contribution to the anti-terrorist operation in the Mediterranean, codenamed Active Endeavour, as well as Russia's role in the implementation of concrete projects, for instance the struggle against drug trafficking in Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The NATO summit reiterated the desire to develop and deepen cooperation with Russia within the framework of the Russia-NATO Council.
