Erdogan to meet President Bush upon return from UN meetings

( Todayszaman )) Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet US President George W. Bush in Washington in a separate official visit following his return from the upcoming UN General Assembly meetings in New York, officials at the Prime Ministry said yesterday.

The date for that second visit to the United States has not been finalized, however it is expected to take place in the "next few months." Erdogan will depart for the United States on Sept. 20 in a trip that will take him to New York and Washington, where he will have the chance to see his new-born grandson Omer Tayyip Erdogan . He will attend the UN General Assembly meetings in New York and address a high-level event on climate change titled "The Future in our Hands: Addressing the Leadership Challenge of Climate Change," convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki -moon.

Erdogan is expected to hold bilateral talks with the leaders of some 25 countries, as well as the UN secretary-general and Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu . The visit to US will be the first foreign trip abroad for Erdogan following his election victory on July 22. Similarly, President Abdullah Gul will today start his first trip abroad after his election to Turkey's top post last month. Gul will be visiting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) as a show of Turkey's continued support toward the Turkish Cypriots in the new era.
