Ruling Turkish Party Makes Defense Speech at Court

Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 July / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / An advocacy of the party made a statement at the hearings on the lawsuit on the ban of the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party (JDP) at the Constitutional Court on 3 July, the Turkish media reported.

Jamil Chichek, a state minister and the Deputy Premier-Minister, made a defense speech, written in 200 papers, on behalf of the JDP. He tried to prove that the JDP did not expose any danger to secularity in Turkey.

On 1 July Abdulrahman Yalchinkaya, General Prosecutor, made a statement as a public prosecutor to ground a suit on ban of the JDP.

After the hearings, Osman Jan, a reporter of the Constitutional Court, will develop a summary report on the suit on the basis of data and documents on the lawsuit. The Turkish General Prosecutor's office and the JDP will submit their written arguments and defense during this period.

Following the distribution of the report among 11 members of the Constitutional Court, Hashim Kilich, the court chairman, will read out a sentence on the ban of the JDP and fix a date of the meeting. Minimum seven votes of 11 members of the Constitutional Court are required to suspend the action of the party.

The oppositional Turkish Republican National and National Movement parties, represented at the parliament, charged the JDP with its statement against the secularity and filed a suit at the Constitutional Court with the demand of ban of the party's activities.
