Turkish police seized 129.3 kg of heroin in an operation in eastern Turkey on Monday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The heroin was destined for Turkey's largest city of Istanbul, said the report, adding the police detained three suspected people in the city of Malatya in connection with the case.

A traditional transit hub along international drug routes, Turkey has stepped up efforts to fight drug trafficking, which not only feeds addicts but also bankrolls outlawed militants.

Turkish authorities have seized more than 1 ton of heroin in anti-drug operations across the country in the past month alone, according to reported statistics.
