Four Kurdish militants have been killed in clashes with the army in the mountainous province of Tunceli in eastern Turkey, the military said, Press TV reported.

The fighting erupted Wednesday as the Turkish military was carrying out an operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), said a statement on the army's website.

The Turkish troops also seized four automatic rifles, 10 hand grenades, and other ammunition, AFP quoted the statement as saying.

Last Thursday, four Kurdish militants were killed when the Turkish air force carried out airstrikes on PKK positions in northern Iraq.

"Four fighters were killed and five wounded in large-scale Turkish air raids on Thursday," Ahmed Denis, a spokesman for the PKK, was quoted by AFP as saying.

About 20 fighter jets attacked PKK hideouts in the Zap-Khakurk region in northern Iraq.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, took up arms against Ankara in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.
