Turkey to continue assisting Afghanistan - FM Davutoglu

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Tuesday Turkey supported Afghanistan in many fields and will continue to do so in the future, Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking to Turkish reporters as part of the Kabul conference, Davutoglu said that Turkey contributed to activities in Afghanistan that would facilitate a national compromise.

Turkey is in Afghanistan as part of NATO and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Yet Turkey's presence in Afghanistan is more than that of an ordinary NATO member state. Turkey views the security and stability of Afghanistan as her own security and stability, Davutoglu said.

Turkey and Afghanistan share the same fate. Turkey is the country that Afghan people look at most warmly. Since 2005, Turkey provided 250 million USD to Afghanistan and this figure is the greatest amount of assistance that Turkey provided to any country since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, Davutoglu said.

The international Kabul conference carried symbolic importance. The fact that around 70 representatives of various states and international organizations and 47 foreign ministers attended the conference shows the international community's interest in Afghanistan, Davutoglu also said.

Minister Davutoglu held bilateral meetings in Kabul within the framework of the Kabul conference, including with Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki and EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
