The fire started at 6 a.m. on Monday on the roof of the four-story building on Küçükdolap Street in the Unkapanı Yavuz Sinan neighborhood of Fatih and quickly spread to other parts of the building, killing five people. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Police and firefighting teams arrived at the scene after being notified by local residents.

Four people living in the building -- Kadir Kaya, Gülsüm Şahin, Vahit Berksoy and Amin Bayramov -- were injured after they jumped from windows to escape the flames.

Three people suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to the Haseki Teaching and Research Hospital and the İstanbul Teaching and Research Hospital by ambulance.
