Former head of the general staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Ilker Basbug appeared for the first time before the court on Monday in Istanbul, Zaman newspaper reported.
Basbug is accused of involvement in organising a campaign to discredit the ruling Justice and Development Party.
At the court hearing, together with Bashbug were a number of other former senior military officials in Turkey, including Hasan Igsiz, Mehmet Otuzbiroglu, Mehmet Eroz and others among the defendants.
Earlier, on January 6, Basbug was taken into custody in the courtroom where he was called to testify.
General Basbug retired in 2010. At present, his connections with the so-called group Ergenekon which is accused of anti-government conspiracy are being investigated.
