The decision on holding an extraordinary congress of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party was adopted by the country's prime minister, the TRT Haber TV channel quoted Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying May 5.

Erdogan expressed hope that this decision will be positive for the country and the ruling party.

Earlier, Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the extraordinary congress will be held May 22.

It was earlier reported that a congress will be held in mid-May and the ruling party's current chairman Davutoglu will not run for that position again.

The decision to hold the extraordinary congress was made at a meeting between Erdogan and Davutoglu on May 4.

Candidates for the chairman position at the Justice and Development Party were named May 5.

The Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yildirim, Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus, and the ruling party's vice chairman Mehmet Ali Sahin are among the candidates.
