BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 13
By Anastasia Savchenko - Trend:
The TurkStream (also known as Turkish Stream) gas pipeline is beneficial, because it ensures Turkey's energy security, as well as the uninterrupted gas supply to Europe, since 16 billion cubic meters of gas will flow to Europe, Director of BKS Broker's Sales Office Vyacheslav Abramov told Trend.
Abramov noted that it is cheaper for Gazprom to export through this gas pipeline, since the company is its owner.
"Turkey is one of the largest consumers of Russian gas in Europe. Russia delivered about 24 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey in 2018. Only Germany bought more Russian gas than Turkey in Europe," the expert said.
The expert noted that the new gas pipeline is beneficial for Turkey, since gas is now supplied to the country directly, bypassing intermediaries, and at competitive prices.
"Earlier, Turkish President Recep Erdogan spoke about the possibility of increasing purchases of Russian gas," Abramov added.
Construction work on the TurkStream project began in 2017. The TurkStream runs along the bottom of the Black Sea to the European part of Turkey and further to the border with Greece.
The first branch of the pipeline is intended for supplying the Turkish market, the second - for deliveries to the countries of Southern and Southeast Europe. The throughput of each branch is about 15.8 billion cubic meters.
The ceremony of the official launch of the TurkStream gas pipeline took place on Jan. 8, 2020.
