(Turkish Daily News) - Danish Parliament Speaker Christian Mejdahl yesterday voiced support for Turkey's bid to join the European Union, saying that his country was ready to do its best in that respect.

"We know that it will be a long and complicated process. We're mutually ready to do our best," Mejdahl was quoted as saying before a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Bьlent Arэnз. He said the upcoming process was very important both for Turkey and Denmark.

Arэnз expressed hope Mejdahl's visit would contribute to improving ties between the parliaments of the two countries. "We want inter-governmental and inter-parliamentary relations to be strong and we also want to exchange visits as the parliament speakers." He also described the presence of 50,000 Turks in Denmark as an important element that would enhance friendship between the two countries.

The visiting parliament speaker later had talks with State Minister Ali Babacan, who is also Turkey's chief negotiator for European Union talks, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoрan.
