The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is interested in creating a gas distribution system in Albania, a senior SOCAR representative told media on Friday.

The representative said that Albania's gas distribution system is undeveloped. SOCAR's participation in this process can bring the company great profit.

"An agreement has been reached with the country's government that SOCAR will work to create the infrastructure and use the underground storage facilities in Albania," the representative added.

Montenegro also has the problems with gasification.

On Friday, the shareholders of the project for the development of Azerbaijani gas condensate field Shah Deniz announced the selection of TAP as the transportation route for its gas to European markets. TAP offers to supply gas to the Greek and Italian markets.

The TAP project is designed to transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania across the Adriatic Sea to the south of Italy and further to Western Europe.

TAP has already signed the memorandums of understanding with the developers of the Ionian-Adriatic Pipeline project - Croatian Plinacro, BH-Gas from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as with the governments of Montenegro and Albania.

The Ionian-Adriatic pipeline is a prospective gas pipeline for supplying gas to the Western Balkans. It is planned to connect it to TAP from Fier (Albania), then via Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the city of Split in Croatia.
