Turkmen President: Caspian region is major world centre on hydrocarbon production

The Caspian region is rapidly becoming one of the world's largest centres for the production and processing of hydrocarbon resources, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers in Ashgabat, a statement from the Turkmen government said.

The Caspian region is rapidly becoming one of the world's largest centres for the production and processing of hydrocarbon resources, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers in Ashgabat, a statement from the Turkmen government said.

The Caspian Sea washes the coasts of Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan.

"Today our main task is to combine objective economic interests with the need to preserve the environment and water and the biological diversity of the Caspian Sea, to prevent violations of the fragile ecological balance," the president said.

According to him, the unique natural environment of the Caspian Sea is the real gem of nature with an exceptionally diverse flora and fauna which is the province of all mankind and therefore requires the special attention of the international community.

Berdimuhamedov instructed cooperation be intensified with other countries and international organisations for the implementation of joint projects on conservation of biological diversity, climate change, environmental protection and rational use of natural resources.

The other day it was reported that Turkmenistan considers it reasonable to create a new cooperation mechanism International ecological dialogue on the Caspian Sea under the auspices of the UN, , in order to consolidate efforts of the Caspian Sea countries in the sphere of environmental protection.
