The construction of the second combined-cycle unit at the Shimal power plant in Baku is on schedule, Azerenergy JSC (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) said on Feb.24.

The construction of the second combined-cycle unit with capacity of 409 megawatt at the Shimal power plant is of great significance in terms of strengthening the energy security of the Absheron peninsular.

"The program for development of the Shimal power plant is continuing successfully. The works on construction of the second power unit with capacity of 409 megawatt has started in accordance to the agreement signed with Japanese Toyo Engineering. Currently, the construction of the power unit is continuing in accordance to the schedule," the JSC said.

Azerenergy JSC intends to complete the works on construction of the second combined-cycle unit by late 2014.

Currently, the Shimal power plant has one combined-cycle unit with capacity of 400 megawatt. At present, the power plant meets a quarter of the electricity demand of Baku and Absheron. This figure will hit 35-40 percent after the construction of the second unit.
The power plant generated around 1.9 billon kilowatt/hours electricity in 2013. This figure exceeded 208 million kilowatt/hours in January.

Azerenergy JSC is the main electricity producer in Azerbaijan. It owns over 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kilovolt-amperes, as well as eight hydro- power plants and 13 thermal power plants.
