The seventeenth session of the fourth convocation of the Majlis (the Turkmen Parliament) will be held on December 22. The agenda includes further improvement of the country's legislation, an official Turkmen source said today.

Mejlis chairperson Akja Nurberdiyeva has recently informed the government about the National Parliament's activity and the work of MPs dealing with social issues.

According to the government report, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of effective interaction between deputies of the country and local bodies, public organizations and the public to promote the democratization of the society, the successful implementation of social policy.

MPs must constantly cooperate with their voters, defending their interests, promoting the prompt solution of urgent issues and improving the social and living conditions of the population.

The term of MPs' powers is five years. The main current staff was elected in February 2009.
According to the Turkmen constitution, the parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution.

It also considers issues the appointment and dismissal of the chief of the Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice and ratifies and terminates international treaties, addresses issues on changes of state borders and the administrative-territorial division of Turkmenistan.
