Central Asia region continues to be in the spotlight of international community, said on Monday the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Elyor Ganiyev at the UN General Assembly, UN Radio reported.

Ganiyev said that the tragic events of last year's summer in Kyrgyzstan had been a serious challenge to peace and stability in the region.

According to the Uzbek minister, the process of investigating the causes of ethnic conflict is not over.

"While these investigations are not carried through and the perpetrators, regardless of their ethnicity, origin and post held, are not punished, it is difficult to expect the restoration of trust and cooperation between the Uzbek and Kyrgyz communities", he said.

The Foreign Minister drew General Assembly's attention to the existence of issues of rational use of water and energy resources in Central Asia, calling "counterproductive and dangerous" attempts to construct large hydro engineering structures at the upper Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers.
