UN resolution on Iran deal hasty

By Mehdi Sepahvand -- Trend:

A former Iranian nuclear official says the UN Security Council resolution obliging countries to recognize the terms of Iran 's nuclear deal is hasty.

The United Nations Security Council on July 20 unanimously approved a resolution that creates the basis for international economic sanctions against Iran to be lifted.

By doing so, the Council endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is described as the "culmination" of diplomatic efforts by the group P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) and Iran, "to reach a comprehensive, long-term and proper solution to the Iranian nuclear issue."

There is this philosophy of the essentiality of will in modern politics, whereby countries have the right to exercise their will regarding their own affairs, Masoud Akhavan Fard, former international and parliamentary affairs director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran told Trend July 21.

Therefore, the legal institutes of any country evaluate that country's involvement in international affairs, he concluded.

He further said that the national security of all countries is the province of their legal entities, therefore no international organization has the right to interfere.

Regarding Iran, articles 77 and 176 of the Constitution say that any international commitment on the side of Iran would be addressed through legal procedures at the Parliament, said Akhavan Fard, who is also a professor of international law.

Not only that, a law recently passed by the government on the nuclear deal stresses the essentiality of the Supreme National Security Council's views on the deal, further relegating any commitment to the deal to the country's legal institutes, the former official noted.

"Therefore, we perceive the resolution to be subject to approval, dismissal, or assessment by the Iranian Parliament. So, passing the resolution was a bit hasty and we must wait for Iranian officials' reaction," he stated.
