Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said that the Islamic Republic has helped Syrian and Iraqi army in fight against terrorism.

"We helped Iraq and Syria's government and army in fighting terrorism upon their request," Rouhani said, Iran's state IRINN TV reported Sept. 22.

He made the remarks at a ceremony to mark the anniversary of Iraq's invasion of Iran back in 1980.

Each year, from the 1980's, the day of Iraq's attack on Iran is marked as the "Sacred Defense" week in the country. The war ended on August 20, 1988 with the signing of a ceasefire agreement and the borders of the two countries remained in a pre-war state.

Rouhani said that the Iranian army is the region's biggest power which can fight terrorism. He further said that if other regional countries face terrorism, they can count upon Iran's help.

Following the Rouhani's speech, military parades were held in Tehran and various cities across the country. All units of Iranian Army as well as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) participated in the parade.

In Tehran, the parade was held in front of the mausoleum of the past Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Besides Rouhani, Iran's military officials, military attaches of foreign missions in Iran, and prominent public figures attended the event.

The latest achievements of the Islamic Republic in the military sphere were demonstrated during the parade.
