No one has been serious in speaking about a military solution for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This is because such a solution is impossible, US Ambassador in Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza said on Wednesday.
"The main task is to finalize the basic principles; this is not impossible. But military solutions are impossible means to appeasing the conflict," he told journalists on Wednesday.
He believes that issues separating both sides can be resolved.
"I think that statements on the possible use of force to resolve the conflict are not heard as often as they were previously. This is a positive development," he said.
Bryza stated that during his activity in Baku he witnessed that Azerbaijan is serious about negotiating a peaceful settlement of the conflict and committed to the non-use of force.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions.
