Japan has poor communications services after the powerful earthquake today, Georgia's Ambassador to Japan Revaz Beshidze told the Georgian Rustavi-2 TV company.

He said the embassy is trying to contact with Georgian citizens in Japan.

"We have calld 35 citizens," he said. "But we cannot say anything about their fate."

Beshidze said there is no information yet on the number of injured or killed.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 hit Japan's northeastern coast. The quake's epicentre is thought to have been 24 kilometers below the ocean off the Miyagi prefecture. It shook buildings in Tokyo, some 373 kilometers away.
