A recently adopted law on culture in Turkmenistan complies with the Venice Charter and the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Turkmen National Service for the Protection, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments Director Mohammed Mammadov said in an interview this week with the Neutralniy Turkmenistan newspaper.

"The law ensures preservation and management in accordance with UNESCO requirements - in particular, in terms of the Merv, Kunya Urgench and Nisa monuments, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List," he said.

Mammadov added that the law also opens up opportunities to nominate other historical and cultural sites in Turkmenistan for the prestigious list.

The Great Silk Road passed through Turkmenistan. The country has a rich folk culture, diverse landscapes, and unique archaeological sites.

The relevant agencies in Turkmenistan took into account UNESCO recommendations while developing the law, he said.

Mammadov stressed that the law's Article 8 is vital as it divides cultural property protection into the preliminary, conservation, restoration and special stages.

"Thus, the importance of maintaining a scientific and an individual approach to conserving cultural values was secured in each case," he said.

Mammadov added that the law allows more effective measures to be adopted to preserve certain archaeological monuments, which are located in agricultural zones.
