Car bombings kill at least five in Baghdad

At least five people were killed Sunday in two car bombings in Baghdad, police said, dpa reported.

Three people died and 12 were wounded when a car bomb went off inside a garage in the area of Alawi in the centre of the Iraqi capital.

Two more civilians died and five were injured in a second explosion in the mainly Shiite area of Kadhemia in northern Baghdad.

Attacks, mostly blamed on Sunni militants, are almost daily occurrences in Iraq.

A surge in recent months has raised the prospect of a return to the sectarian violence that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

According to UN estimates, 8,868 people were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in Iraq in five years.
