The seventeenth session of the fourth convocation of the Majlis (the Turkmen Parliament) has been held in Ashgabat today, an official Turkmen source said today.

The agenda includes a package of bills developed in the context of the priorities of the state policy and legal reform.

According to a government report, chairperson of the Majlis Akja Nurberdiyeva informed the leadership about the work undertaken within a comprehensive program to further improve the national legislation.

President Berdimuhamedov stressed the importance of the legislative activity conducted by the national parliament.

He said that the creation of a modern legal framework corresponding to the international law and standards is an important factor in the further progress of the country.

The term of MPs' powers is five years. The main current staff was elected in February 2009.
According to the Turkmen constitution, the parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution.

It also considers issues the appointment and dismissal of the chief of the Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice and ratifies and terminates international treaties, addresses issues on changes of state borders and the administrative-territorial division of Turkmenistan.
