National Flag Day which appeared in the calendar among Turkmenistan's most important dates in 1995, has been marked today by festive celebrations and the president's message to the people.

"We have been widely celebrating National Flag Day, symbolising the unity of our people, their continued commitment to high ideals of humanism, peace and creation," Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.

He said that the Day of Turkmen State Flag is a holiday, including the realised centuries-old dream of the Turkmen people about the sovereignty of the country, its achievements and great goals.

A high flagpole was set up in the square outside the National Museum in Ashgabat in 2008. Once, this 133 metre flag weighing nearly half a ton and measuring 52.2 by 35 metres was certified by Guinness World Records.

A Turkmen flag is green with a vertical red and burgundy stripe. There are five national carpet patterns with a white crescent and five stars on it.

Using green is not by chance. The green colour symbolises the unity of time, life and land. A crescent represents a clear sky and white five-pointed stars are the symbol of the five regions of the Caspian country.
