UN Security Council postpones Syria vote to Thursday

The UN Security Council decided Wednesday to delay by one day its vote on renewing the mandate for the unarmed military observers in Syria whose three-month term is due to expire, DPA reported.

Diplomats said the council will meet Thursday at 14:00 GMT on Syria. But it was not immediately known whether either of two separate draft resolutions concerning the mandate of the observers would be put to a vote. Western countries called for a 45-day extension while Russia preferred 90 days.

German Ambassador Peter Wittig told reporters, "Those bombings (in Syria) dramatically increase the pressure on the Security Council to act. Syria is sliding into chaos."

"We now hope that Russia and China will now engage in meaningful negotiations on the resolution that we put on the table. We still hope that there can be a consensus on more forceful actions of the Security Council along the lines that we suggested."
