Georgia informs NATO about situation in Georgian-Russian border

A meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission on the situation in the Georgian-Russian border was held at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Head of Georgian representation in NATO Nugzar Mgaloblishvili informed the commission about the situation in Dagestan section of the Georgian-Russian border, where law enforcement conducted an operation to neutralize militant group penetrated from Russia.

The sides expressed concern over the situation and called for a solution to all the problems on the basis of internationally accepted norms. NATO officials declared inadmissibility of intensity export of the North Caucasus to Georgia.

The Georgian Interior Ministry is carrying out the operation in Lopota to free the hostages and detain an armed group of saboteurs revealed near the border with Dagestan on August 29.

According to the information, a group of saboteurs who captured three groups of hostages consisting of civilians came through the border from Russia to Georgia.

According to the statement, roughly 11 members of the armed group were killed during the operation. The saboteurs refused to surrender. As a result, the hostage release operation started. Three members of the special forces of the Georgian Interior Ministry were killed and five were injured in the clashes with saboteurs during the operation in the Lopota gorge.
