Adjara Supreme Council has approved the candidacy of 31-year old Archil Khabadze to the position of head of the autonomy's government. This took place after 13 members of the Georgian Dream coalition voted in his favour, whilst eight members of the Supreme Council representing the United National Movement withheld their votes. The Supreme Council of Adjara consists of 21 deputies.
The new head of government was presented to the Supreme Court by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. The candidacy of Khabadze.was proposed by Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.
According to results of the elections to Adjara Supreme Council, which took place on October 1 simultaneous to the parliamentary elections, the Georgian Dream won 13 seats whilst the remaining eight seats went to the former ruling party, United National Movement.
As the head of the government of the Autonomous Republic, Khabadze will replace the member of Saakashvili's team, Levan Varshalomidze, who had been in office since 2004, after the Rose Revolution and the removal Aslan Abashidze from power in the autonomy.
