The Georgian National Security Council makes important political decisions in connection with the announcement of peace, war, or reconciliation, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said at a special briefing at the president's residence Aug. 19.

The president discussed the functions of the National Security Council amid the constitutional amendments at a meeting with Georgian MPs, the diplomatic corps, accredited in the country, and experts.

"We reiterated that the National Security Council is part of the constitutional system of Georgia," the president added. "The effective functioning of the council ensures taking the most important political decisions, such as the announcement of peace, war, truce, sending armed forces into the territory of another country, the announcement of the state of emergency, restricting the rights of citizens."

It should be stressed that the experts have recently stressed that the government intends to deprive the National Security Council under the president of some powers, but later these claims have been refuted by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
