At least four people were killed Monday and two more injured in a suspected US drone strike in Pakistan's restive north-western area along the Afghan border, intelligence officials said, dpa reported.

The unmanned US aircraft targeted a vehicle in the Barmal area of South Waziristan, which is one of the seven tribal districts and a haven of al-Qaeda-linked militants.

A Pakistani intelligence official who sought anonymity said, "Two missiles were fired at the vehicle which was moving towards the Nargase area."

"Four passengers on board have been killed so far in the strike and two were injured," he said. "The identities of those killed were still unknown."

The US has stepped up drone strikes in the tribal areas, which some officials in Washington have described as the hub of international terrorism.

The Pakistani government condemns the strikes because they increase anti-US sentiment among the public but it is believed that its security agencies help the US to identify targets.
