Egypt's Interior Ministry says militants affiliated with the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group have shot dead an Egyptian brigadier general in the country's troubled Sinai Peninsula, PressTV reported.

The ministry's press service said the Takfiri elements shot and killed the official overnight in el-Arish, the capital of Egypt's North Sinai Province.

In a similar shooting earlier this week, the Velayat Sinai militant group, a Daesh affiliate, killed Khaled Kamal Osman, another general with Egypt's Interior Ministry, in a drive-by shooting in el-Arish. Police fired back, but the assailants fled the scene.

There has been a rise in terror attacks targeting Egyptian security forces and civilians in Sinai over the past two years.

Velayat Sinai terrorists have claimed responsibility for most of the raids in the Sinai Peninsula. Last November, the group pledged allegiance to Daesh, which is wreaking havoc in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

The Egyptian army has been engaged in a fresh military offensive against the militants in Sinai over the past weeks. The army says hundreds of militants have been killed in the operations.
