Six people died and seven were injured when a car and a truck collided in the southeastern province of Mardin on Sunday evening, Today's Zaman reported.

The car that was carrying 13 people came around a bend on the Mardin-Şanlıurfa highway and slammed into a truck that was approaching in the opposite lane.

Zeyni Çanak (45), Özder Çanak (10), Azize Aktı (43), Arzu Aktı (9), Leyla Aktı (3) and Ramazan Aktı (14) died at the scene.

Seven people were injured and taken to hospitals in Mardin and Şanlıurfa, a province near Mardin. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Derik State Hospital morgue.

The Çanak and Aktı families were returning from a wedding in Mardin's Kızıltepe district to the Viranşehir district of the same province. The driver of the car, Hamza Çanak, was driving fast when his car hit the truck.

Mardin Police Chief Derviş Kaya said they have launched an investigation into the case. One of the causes of the accident may be insufficient signage explaining that the divided two-lane road had become a single lane due to road construction.

The Mardin-Şanlıurfa highway was closed for several hours after the accident.
