The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who is on visit to Iran, held a meeting with the Supreme Religious Leader of this country Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iranian television reported.
At the meeting the Religious Leader of Iran stated that Iran and Azerbaijan must develop bilateral relations, in spite of presence of states, which protest against this.
"Iran and Azerbaijan have a general history, religion. Bilateral relations can be even more sincere and more serious," said the Religious Leader of Iran.
Aliyev said that Azerbaijan directed all its efforts towards further development of all spheres in the bilateral relations.
The President of Azerbaijan is on an official visit to Iran starting from March 10.
Seven agreements on co-operation in different spheres were signed between Iran and Azerbaijan.
As a result of 2008, the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Iran totaled $452.9 million. Export operations amounted to $355.6 million, and import of Iranian goods to Azerbaijan - $97.2 million.
