The Sumgait Technologies Park (STP) plans to begin producing cables for the telecommunication sector, AZENCO Deputy Board Chairman Zaur Mammadov told Trend.
The STP also plans to establish fiber-optic cable production in the future. Mammadov said that telecommunication cables will be produced by late 2012.
"We have already received orders from the biggest players in the Azerbaijani telecommunication market, such as Azercell Telekom [mobile operator] and Delta Telecom [primary provider]," he said. "The matter rests on shipping these products throughout the republic in large shipments."
At present, STP produces protective tubes for optical fiber cables which are already purchased by Azerbaijani telecommunications companies.
"Production may take some time, given the complexity of manufacturing fiber optics technology," he said.
Fiber optic cables are among the most expensive elements in the telecommunication infrastructure.
Sumgait is located 30 kilometers north of Baku.
