The Azerbaijani State Commission on Radio Frequencies has made a positive decision to allocate frequency resources to the Azercell Telekom mobile operator to deploy 3G telecommunications service, the Azerbaijani State Radio Frequency Administration told Trend on Monday.

The matter rests in providing the operator with 1,900 - 2,100 Mhz frequency resources.

Azerfon also renders 3G services at similar frequencies.

There is also the issue of Azercell's willingness to launch a new network in pilot operation, the administration said.

The frequency resources are the first step in obtaining a license to deploy 3G standard, Azercell corporate communication department head Ulviyya Hasanzade told Trend on Monday.

She said the company expects to obtain a license to deploy 3G network in the nearest future.

"As soon as we get the license, we will be able to rapidly provide Baku, the Absheron Peninsula and other Azerbaijani regions with 3G network," she said.

Azercell earlier appealed to the Communications and IT Ministry and submitted all necessary documents to obtain a license.

The official license fee fixed by the state is 11,000 manat. At present, Azerfon has the license to provide 3G telecommunications services.

Operators having the licenses must significantly invest in the infrastructure. They will have to modernize the entire network, all switches, each base station. The company earlier told Trend that the operator has been preparing to introduce third generation network for the last three years. About 30 percent of the base stations involved in the operator's network support 3G standard.
