Registration of the IMEI codes (unique code assigned by the manufacturer) of mobile phones is now available in all the main regional branches of Azerbaijan's postal communication operator LLC Azerpost, the operator told Trend on Tuesday.
The postal operator, after receiving the applications by mobile device owners, provides information about the IMEI codes to the final instance in order to include them into a single database.
The database is replenished by IMEI codes of mobile phones which are imported in Azerbaijan.
Mobile phones that are imported into the country for private use, in the networks of Azerbaijan's mobile operators, should be registered within 30 days.
These rules do not apply to tourists and visitors coming to Azerbaijan, whose mobile phones have a roaming service bolt on.
The system of registration of IMEI-codes was launched in Azerbaijan on May 1.
Currently, over 13 million mobile phones are registered on the data base in Azerbaijan.
In addition to mobile phones, the system also includes GAM standard devices such as navigators and home appliances.
Since the commissioning of the system, the number of phones not corresponding to required standards amounted to some tens of thousands.
There have also been incidents of stealing or loss of mobile phones. The operation of such phones in the networks was stopped.
