Issue of Returning of Akhiska-Turks to Georgia Discussed with Representative of the Council of Europe

Trend I.Alizade / The Chairman of "Vatan" Society of Akhiska-Turks in Azerbaijan , Ibrahim Burkhanov, said that the issue of returning of Akhiska-Turks to Georgia was discussed with the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, PACE rapporteur for Georgia, Igor Gaun.

"We met with Gaun in Georgia . He said that the Council of Europe is seriously worried by the delay of the settlement of this issue. Gaun said that for long years he has been working on this issue and fulfillment of Georgia obligations undertaken before the Council of Europe," Burkhanov said.

Gaun said that this issue was discussed at the meeting of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis with the President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili. Saakashvili informed Davis that the law draft ensuring the returning of the Akhiska-Turks to their native lands will be presented to the discussions in the Parliament in May and Georgia will fulfill its obligations undertaken before the Council of Europe.
