Azerbaijani wrestler Togrul Asgarov has dedicated his victory, first of all, to Azerbaijan.

Togrul Asgarov is a gold medal winner of the freestyle wrestling competitions in the weight category of 65 kilograms as part of the first European Games in Baku.

Asgarov said that the period after the London Olympics to the first European Games was difficult for him.

"The European championship and the world championship were unsuccessful for me for more than two years," he said. "I have been thoroughly preparing for these competitions. My goal was to win a gold medal at the first Evropean Games and I achieved this."

"I wish all athletes to win the games to feel this joy too," he said.

Asgarov said that he is able to win the next Olympic Games and the World Championship.

"I have the potential," he said. "I became an Olympic champion when I was 19. "I have been losing for two years. I had a knee injury and was operated on. Now I am well."

The European Games kicked off in Baku June 12 and will last till June 28.

There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
