Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 6 / Trend , E.Rustamov/
OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Special Envoy Goran Lenmarker sees opportunities to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2009. He urges Azerbaijan and Armenia to make progress in the issue.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
"I hope my upcoming visit to the region will be a positive signal that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is close to being peacefully resolved," Lenmarker said in an interview with the OSCE Web site.
The special envoy's visit to the region is scheduled for next week. He will visit Armenia on Feb. 9-10, Georgia on Feb. 10-12 and Azerbaijan on Feb. 12-14. Lenmarker will negotiate with heads of parliaments, governments and non-governmental organizations representatives.
