ANAMA, UNDP sign joint project

Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) and the UN Development Program (UNDP) signed a joint project on May 20.

The cooperation wit the UNDP began in 1999. The joint project costs $6.6 million. ANAMA is expected to be turned into national mine sweeping center as a part of the implementation of the project, ANAMA director Nazim Ismayilov said at a signing ceremony.

"The third stage of the joint project entitled "Strengthening and Promoting Azerbaijan's Mine Sweeping Potential" calls for technical assistance, advise, coordination and development for ANAMA for three years.

UNDO Director Bruno Pouezat said much work has been done to de-mine Azerbaijani territories during cooperation with ANAMA.

He said ANAMA's activities can set an example for respective bodies of other countries.

The project was signed by ANAMA Director Ismayilov and UNDP Director Pouezat.

About 100, 531,838 square meters of area has been de-mined so far. A total of 425,924 mine and explosives have been neutralized.

The agency has conducted mine sweep in Tartar, Agdam, Fuzuli, Tovuz, Agjabadi, Agstafa and Samukh.
