Azerbaijan, Baku, June 5 / Trend /

The United States and the OSCE Minsk Group spare no effort to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh issue, US State Secretary Hillary Clinton said Monday at a news conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian in Yerevan.

"We call on all the conflicting parties to refrain from using force as the conflict has no military solution", Tert.am news portal quoted Clinton as saying.

She also noted that the U.S. is confident that the solution to the conflict should be based on the Helsinki principles.

"We will exert further efforts in this direction", State Secretary said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the US - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
