Resettlement of Syrian Armenians to Nagorno-Karabakh is a great provocative plan of Armenia, Azerbaijani deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on security and defense Aydin Mirzazade told Trend on Monday.
Today, Armenia has promised to accommodate in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians living in different parts of the world, however, it hasn't managed to do it yet, the MP said.
"It means an open acknowledgment that Armenia occupied Azerbaijani territories. They used to say that allegedly the community has created an independent state in Nagorno-Karabakh, now they admit that it is an activity of Armenia and resettlement of the Syrian Armenians there is an official policy of this state," Mirzazade said.
According to him, a violation by Armenia of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, provocation of artificial changes in ethnic composition of the occupied areas are unsuccessful attempts to find a way out of a difficult situation in which it is now.
"I think that they will not succeed, because the OSCE Mission, investigating the facts as a result of surveys conducted in the occupied territories, noted the fact of the illegal resettlement of population, and announced that it is contrary to international conventions. On the other hand, it's stressed that today these people do not has the documents and are dependent on the local military regime," the MP said.
In addition, Armenians residing in Syria have always used the power as much as possible, Mirzazade said.
"They have always had good opportunities, the government has always paid special attention to them. Today in the civil war they do not support either side, and in bad days for the state tend to leave the country, while, in principle, they should have been protecting the Assad regime," he added.
Armenia tries hard to place Syrian Armenians in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, he said.
"But the Syrian Armenians themselves look at Armenia as a temporary place of residence," Mirzazade said.
This plan of the Armenians, as well as their previous plans, are not implemented either, and Armenia has one way out - to withdraw its troops from occupied territories and recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, the MP said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of
Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
