Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 7

By Seba Agayeva - Trend: It is critical that the international community continues to insist on the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolutions on settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov said on November 7.

The minister made these remarks during his speech at the 6th Democracy Forum held in Indonesia.

"The world is still facing violations of fundamental norms and principles of international law. Today, the occupation by Armenia of our internationally recognized territories -Nagorno Karabakh region and 7 adjacent districts continues to represent the major challenge to maintain basic human rights," Mammadyarov said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
