France as an OSCE Minsk Group co-chair country bears special responsibility for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement together with the US and Russia, massispost.com news website reported citing President of France Francois Hollande.

The head of state made the remarks at the annual dinner of the Coordination Council of the Armenian Organizations of France on Feb. 9.

“We are in haste, and haste really exists, to find a solution to this issue since the dreadful incidents of April 2-4 of the last year reminded us that every day or nearly every day death cases are recorded in Karabakh. Therefore, we have to act to prevent clashes”, the president said.

Hollande noted he plans to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan during the Armenian president’s visit to Paris.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
