Head of the OSCE Baku Office Believes Electoral Code of Azerbaijan Meets European Standards

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend E.Huseynli / The Head of the OSCE Baku Office, Hose Luiz Herrero, said on 24 September at the meeting with the Deputy Chairman and also Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), Ali Ahmadov, that the Electoral Code of Azerbaijan meets with European standards.

According to him, the Electoral Code of Azerbaijan is positively assessed by the international organizations. "A number of technical annexes and amendments are normal," the Ambassador said.

The Government of Azerbaijan and Venice Commission of the Council of Europe held talks on annexes and amendments to the Electoral Code of Azerbaijan. The opposition considers that the Code is in need of change and the election commissions should be formed on an equal basis.

The opinions of the OSCE Baku Office and NAP on the dialogue of the political parties coincided during the meeting. The proposal of discussions between the opposition and government of Azerbaijan was made by both sides, but the talks did not take place due to the format and agenda not being agreed upon. The OSCE Baku Office also supports the talks.

The New Azerbaijan Party was established in 1992 by the former President of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev. Currently the party is presided by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
