Security Checks Launched in Azerbaijani National Army to Prevent Wahabism

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Huseynli / Security measures were reinforced in the National Army of Azerbaijan in order to prevent the expansion of radical wahabism in military units, said Eldar Safaroglu, the head of the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry's press-secretary.

Recently, lieutenant Kamran Asadov, an officer of military unit N in the Khanlar region of Azerbaijan, deserted his military unit in collusion with other members of a radical Wahabi group. Earlier Asadov had stolen a large amount of arms including 4 submachine guns, 1 machine-gun, 20 hand grenades and many other military armaments.

As a result of these activities, the radical group was detained by members of the Azerbaijani National Security Ministry in the Mashtaga settlement of Baku at 3:00pm. One of the members of the group was killed during the operation.

Some parts of stolen guns were found in the aforementioned settlement and at another location in the Ismayilli region.

Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies revealed that radical religious groups were planning to stage terror acts in strategic facilities, as well as diplomatic facilities in the country.

A criminal case has been filed over the incident and an investigation has been launched into case.
