GUAM Secretariat to open Soon
Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 February / corr Trend S.Agayeva / The opening of Secretariat of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM is scheduled for May, the Secretariat of the Organization based in Kiev said on 16 February.
A decision on establishment of the Secretariat of the organization was made by the Council of Foreign Ministers of GUAM member-states - Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. The Secretariat set up its activities on 1 September 2007. Every member of the organization sent to the Secretariat its representative. A representative from Moldova fulfills the position of Secretariat's Program Coordinator.
The ceremonial opening of the Secretariat will be held with the participation of foreign ministers from four countries.
Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization but left four years later. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name; Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM.
