Coordinating Council to be Set up around Presidential Candidate from Ruling Party of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 May/ corr. Trend E. Babayev/ The New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) will set up a new body to coordinate the work of the political parties supporting the current President Ilham Aliyev's nomination.

"According to Action Plan of NAP for election, Coordinating Council will be set up to coordinate the work of the political parties after the election campaign officially starts," Siyavush Novruzov, the deputy executive secretary of NAP said to Trend on 16 May.

The presidential election in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October. The ruling party has announced that it will nominate the current president Ilham Aliyev for the presidential elections. Furthermore, the oppositional Vahdat and the Advisory Council of Pro-Government parties, uniting 8 parties, will support Ilham Aliyev in the elections.

The Confederation of Trade Unions of Azerbaijan and Red Cross Society have officially nominated the President Ilham Aliyev for the presidential elections.

According to Novruzov, the ruling party will not ignore the decisions of other political forces to nominate Ilham Aliyev. "We will coordinate work of these parties after changes and additions are made into the Election Code and election schedule is available," he said.

NAP was set up in 1992 by Heydar Aliyev while he was the chairman of the Supreme Majlis in Nakhchivan. The President Ilham Aliyev is the current chairman of the party.
