Establishment of New Political Party to be Announced in Threshold of Presidential Elections in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 June / Trend corr. E.Babayev / The attempts is being taking in Azerbaijan to establish a new political party. "The party is expected to be established on the threshold of presidential elections," Aydin Guliyev, former organization man of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA), told Trend on 5 June.

Guliyev worked as a Secretary of Ideology for a long period of time. Guliyev participated in formation of the right central pro-oppositional Open Society party (OSP). Rasul Guliyev, who has been living as an emigrant in the United States for more than ten years, is the leader of the party. To February 2007, Guliyev was the Chairman of DPA, however Guliyev and his supporters protesting the party's decision to hold a dialogue with the authorities and separated from the party. Later, Guliyev's supporters founded their own Open Society party. Several months after foundation, Guliyev left the party due to certain differences with the leadership of the organization.

According to Guliyev, at present, he continues to hold discussions with well-known politicians to create a political party. "Some politicians want to establish a pro-governmental non-governmental organization. However, the majority supports to establish a political party. This is not differences, this is discussions. I will agree with the majority," Guliyev said. The discussions on the issue will be completed soon. Guliyev did not exclude that he may resign from the chief editor position of the Baku khabar newspaper after he will engage in the political activity. Guliyev will take all the necessary steps to separate the newspaper from the policy.

At present, some 52 political parties have been registered in Azerbaijan.
