Azerbaijani Opposition Party Defines Position Regarding Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 9 June / Trend corr. E.Babayev / The Azerbaijani opposition Great Establishment Party (GEP) has defined its position regarding the presidential elections. "Many members of the party support the idea to participate in the elections," MP Fazail Gazanfaroglu, Chairman of GEP, told Trend .

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held in October 2008.

The Azadlig bloc, that unites three opposition parties - Popular Front, Citizen and Development and Liberal, has stated that the bloc would boycott the upcoming presidential elections. Isa Gambar- leader of Musavat party, Sardar Jalaloglu-chairman of Democratic party and Mais Gulmammadov- Chairman of Green party of Azerbaijan, have already nominated their candidature to the presidential post. On 5 May, Eldar Namazov, Head of the Public forum 'For Azerbaijan, stated that he would also nominated his candidature to the presidential post. The candidature of Ilham Aliyev will be nominated from the ruling New Azerbaijan party.

Previously, Gazanfaroglu stated that the party would not participate in the elections with its candidate if the proposals made by the opposition would not be taken into consideration while making amendments and supplements into the Election Code.

According to Gazanfaroglu, some new points of the draft do not satisfy the party. "I support participation in the upcoming presidential elections. The final decision regarding participation in the elections will be made after the meeting of the Supreme Assembly by the end of month," Gazanfaroglu said.

GEP was founded in 2004. In 2005, the party held the state registration. Fazail Gazanfaroglu is an MP of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament).
